Only A Mediocre Person Is Always At Their Best

That delightful quote was uttered my W. Somerset Maugham, an English playwright, novelist and short story writer.

Lately, though, I seem to be caught up with a different quotation.

“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expect.”

I’ve got my own to-do list of things-to-improve-on. Time to go take care of some of this things…

Yardstick of Quality

Excellence, not perfection

Colin Cowie extraordinary weddingsSeveral years ago I attended a NACE Educational Conference in Charleston that featured Colin Cowie as the keynote speaker.

He shared many examples of his stunning work, which sparkled from creativity and detail.

Recently, he was on Oprah to promote his new book, ‘Extraordinary Weddings.’ He reiterated an important bit of philosophy he had shared at NACE. Cowie doesn’t believe in using the word, ‘Perfect.’ To paraphrase him,

“An entire event is never perfect. At the end of the day, if you’ve surrounded yourself with competent, qualified professionals, they will solve whatever problems or challenges come up, and will insulate the client from them.”

His outlook is music to my ears. Even at Cowie’s level, he maintains a completely realistic outlook on his message to the client.
