NACE Keynote: Unwrapped With Passion

NACE Keynote
Food Network’s Marc Summers

Over the past 15 years of attending NACE Educational Conferences, it is fair to say theassociation has had both hits and occasional misses with opening sessions. The opening keynote absolutely sets the tone for the entire conference. Monday’s keynote by Food Network’s Marc Summers was a home run.

The theme for Marc’s presentation was: Passion! The most over-used buzz word, and why you need it.

Marc’s self-deprecating sense of humor was present from the start. He joked that when invited to speak, he asked if NACE would like him bring along several personalities from the Food Network, such as Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay, and Mario Batali. Of course, the organization said YES!

http://www.foodnetwork.comMarc said, “Sorry, I can’t make that happen, BUT, I can have some interview segments pre-produced with Rachel, Bobby and Mario, talking about food, passion, career, and their businesses.” Indeed, that worked out just fine.

For the next hour or so, Marc entertained the NACE audience with tales of his unlikely career path from being a 9-year old magician in Indianapolis to the highly successful Food Network, with his shows: Unwrapped and Dinner: Impossible, as well other behind-the-scenes specials.

He interspersed his talk with classic video clips from his career. One such clip from the Kids Game Show, Double Dare, on Nickelodeon showed Marc melting down into continual hysterical laughter as he ‘attempted’ to guide the young contestants through a slimy obstacle course. Yes, sometimes, when you get the giggles, there’s no way out.

The all-time classic was Marc’s appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He followed an angst-ridden, Burt Reynolds, who was in the throes of a nasty separation and divorce from Lonnie Anderson.

Burt was just not ‘in the mood,’ and when Marc came out, he starting sniping at Marc. It went from snarky comments to tossing water on Marc (and he returned the favor). It finally erupted into a whipped cream pie fight, emulating a video clip from Marc’s TV show. It had the tension of possible brawl, but, in the end Burt hugged Marc, and all was well. Marc was quick to point out to NACE, that was his one and only appearance on the Tonight Show, to date.

The interview footage Marc produced with Bobby, Rachel and Mario gave attendees the essence of what drives them, what they enjoy in life and business, and how passion plays into their individual worlds.

The presentation was entertaining, insightful and educational. Great start to the conference education.

Donation Power

The Corinthian Houston
The Corinthian Houston

This week, I’m attending the NACE Educational Conference in Houston. Monday night, there was an off-premise event at The Corinthian Houston.” On their website, it’s subtitled, ‘A Classic Event Space.’ Trust me, this doesn’t begin to describe it.

Starting with the fact that this is an industry conference, so many of the ancillary products and services are donated outright or heavily discounted. For good reason…. one wants to be associated with this event.

Food and beverage stations were just the beginning. The themed-event, based on the 7 Deadly Sins, including thespian players, representing each sin, green-screen photo-booths (overlaying you with the titles of the sin of your choice), casino games in the mezzanine, tarot card reading, a centrally positioned video DJ flanked by go-go dance booths. Both the DJ and the dance areas were framed be free-stranding truss work that provided the support for spotlighting, dance floor lighting, and the flat screen TV’s.

Specially selected furniture, wall draping, table covers, and uplighting completed the entire scope of the event.

People enjoyed the event, so much, they simply lost track of time. There is no better compliment.

Attendees from the conference will go home, talking specifically about this event. Many will remember it for years to come. It was that good.

Businesses are asked for donations, constantly. The important wisdom is knowing when and why to say ‘Yes,’ and when to say ‘No.’ This was a showcase event for The Corinthian and every support vendor that participated. It ‘associates’ them with The Corinthian and the members of the Houston Chapter of NACE.

When was the last time you felt great when giving away your services? A donation to this event wasn’t just ‘going along with the request of a contact.’ It was a brilliant opportunity to showcase. Can you, and do you, spot the difference when such a situation presents itself to you.

The premise of this show is to tell real stories of marriages that don’t end well. Not in divorce, but in death. Not exactly a fairytale ending.

In this world of ‘rubber-necking’ other people’s problems, will this show draw an audience? Will you watch it?
